Why Vaccinate Your Dog?

Regular immunizations play a big part in keeping your pet healthy.  You may board your dogs or take them to day camps.  You let your pets have playdates and visits to groomers.  These activities, no matter how enjoyable, present risks to their health because of the added exposure to disease.  That's why keeping your dogs' vaccinations up to date is so crucial.

As with humans, vaccines help pets resist infection by building up an immunity to the disease.  Like humans, your dogs' immunity does not last.  Your dogs will need boosters at recommended interval to ensure a lifetime of protection.

What Vaccinations are Necessary?

Veterinarians recommend a set of core vaccinations for your dogs.  Non-core immunizations may be needed, especially if your pet spends more time outdoors.

  • Dogs should be vaccinated against rabies, canine hepatitis, distemper, and parvovirus.
  • Non-core vaccines such as Lyme disease, Bordetella, canine influenza, and leptospirosis may be recommended.

The core immunizations should be repeated every one to three years.  Non-core vaccines require boosters as well.  If you live in a high-tick area, you should consider vaccinating your dog against Lyme disease.  Canine influenza and Bordetella may be required if you board your dogs.  Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria that can be found in soil and water.  It causes severe gastrointestinal distress and can be spread from animals to humans.  Be sure to discuss the need for non-core vaccinations with our staff.
