Potential Flea and Tick Exposure

Fleas are small parasites that feed on animal blood. Ticks are also parasites but often take the form of insects. Fleas and ticks are usually found in woods, weeds, and tall grass. Fleas and ticks can easily attach to different animals, like birds, rodents, and deer.

Regularly clean and vacuum your home, including carpets, upholstery, and pet bedding, to reduce the presence of fleas and ticks. Wash your pet's bedding frequently.

Why Are Fleas and Ticks Dangerous?

Fleas and ticks may cause serious harm because they might transmit diseases. They take blood from different people and pets. Flea and tick exposure potentially spreads fever, tapeworms, and disease. Exposure to some conditions, such as spotted fever, Lyme, and Tularemia, may cause death. Other infections can cause lifelong severe and chronic pain.

The Importance of Flea and Tick Prevention

Perhaps your pet avoids a serious disease, but you’ve noticed them scratching aggressively. Tick and Flea's bites cause rapid skin irritation. Your pet may be irritated for months based on the life cycle of these parasites. Take your pet to our veterinary clinic if it has been scratching aggressively for several days.

Flea and Tick Treatment Methods

Our staff uses flea combs to identify fleas on the surface. Fleas often target cat heads and dog tails. Ticks are more visible than fleas. Look for private areas like ears, tails, armpits, and the groin for ticks. We will provide a thorough inspection of your pet’s skin. We recognize each pet has unique needs. We may prescribe medication or recommend other preventative measures.

What You Can Do to Keep Your Pet Safe

Look all over your dog’s body after outdoor activity, as fleas and ticks can latch anywhere. Try to keep your landscaping trimmed as short as possible to minimize the threat of potential fleas and ticks infiltrating the area. If fleas or ticks have latched onto your pet, try to remove them as soon as possible. You may use flea baths and tick removal tools, like tweezers.
